COTTON Species:

1) Upland cotton or American cotton (Gossypium hirsutum)

Upland cotton has a high yield and is easy to grow. Upland cotton makes up 95 percent of the cotton grown on US soil, is used in a number of nonwoven products in the feminine hygiene and baby care categories. Upland cotton, relative to other species, is comprised of relatively short fibers. It’s widely used in a variety of consumer products where manufacturers are looking for quality and purity in an all-natural fiber.  Gossypium hirsutum is the predominant species which alone contributes about 90% to the global cotton production. It’s native to South and Central America, Mexico, and the Caribbean

2) Egyptian cotton (Gossypium barbadense)

Egyptian cotton or Sea Island cotton or Peruvian Cotton or Tanguish Cotton or Quality cotton has longer, silkier strands than most types of cotton. It’s soft, fine and durable, which gives it a reputation for quality, but it’s harder to produce in large quantities than upland cotton. Although it’s often called Egyptian cotton, its origin lie in South America. Gossypium barbadense only comprises about 8% of global cotton output.  Egyptian and pima cotton share similar premium characteristics, and even have the same scientific name -gossypium barbadense. But, their differences lie in where they come from. Pima cotton is primarily grown in the United States, and Egyptian cotton from the Nile River Valley in Egypt.

Pima Cotton is an an extra-long-staple cotton than conventional cotton, this variety is used in some of the finest fabrics in the world. It’s very soft, quite strong, and it resists pilling, wrinkling, or fading. Pima cotton is native to tropical South America. Widely-copied, pima cotton is coveted for its apparel and bedding applications. Pima cotton is among the softest and most delicate kinds of cotton in the world because of its extra-large staple fiber that exceeds the size of average cotton fiber. Almost all luxury brands prefer to use this cotton to facilitate their spinning process and produce a fabric that is even and easy to dye.

Comprising less than two percent of global cotton production, gossypium arboretum is the species commonly known as tree cotton is native to India and Pakistan.

India is the only country in the world where all the four cultivated species are grown on commercial scale.

4) Levant cotton (Gossypium herbaceum)

Levant cotton is native to southern Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. Comprising less than two percent of the global market, Levant cotton is primarily spun into yarns to make a variety of fabrics.
